Summary
On November 13th, 2022, four college students were murdered inside their residence at 1122 King Road in Moscow, Idaho. Bryan Kohberger, a criminology student at nearby Washington State University, was subsequently charged with their murders and is set to go to trial in August of 2025. It only takes a few moments of 'Googling' this case to see the polarizing opinions on whether Bryan Kohberger is guilty or not. I also have my own opinions but, despite them, I've tried to remain as unbiased as possible and present only the facts in this case using reputable sources. Method of Murder: Stabbing with a fixed-blade weapon (Source)
Evidence (so far): tan, leather knife sheath with "Ka-Bar" & "USMC" on it (Source) with single source male DNA. It was found next to victim Madison Mogen's body and subsequently linked to Bryan Kohberger through a 'tip' by the FBI, who had tested the DNA themselves and relayed the information back to Law Enforcement. This IGG data was subject to a Franks Hearing, but the courts ruled the evidence admissible and upheld law enforcement's probable cause. This evidence, along with DNA evidence collected from the Kohberger's residence and video camera evidence of the subject's car in and around the time of the murders was the basis, ultimately, for Bryan Kohberger's arrest. More evidence, such as the survivor's testimonies, cell phone data from the suspect's phone, and other items and objects obtained during warrant searches have also been admitted. The State is also relying on video surveillance and cell phone tower evidence to place the defendant in and around murder scene. The suspect is presumed innocent until the courts decide his guilt.
Timeline of Events
Below is a timeline of events that are related to the both the defendant (Bryan Kohberger), directly before, during and after the night of the murders, and anything having to do with the case itself. If I am missing anything OR if anything is inaccurate, please let me know at [email protected].
Moving forward, I am hereby referring to Bryan Kohberger, or his Defense team, as simply "The defendant" within the timeline, for simplicity (and uniformity) reasons.
2022
January 10th, 2022: The defendant purchased a black balaclava from Dick's Sporting Goods. This mask is the same type of mask described by DM that she witnessed worn by a male in the residence on November 13, 2022. (Source)
March 20th, 2022 to March 30th, 2022: It was reported by the State that the defendant purchased a Ka-Bar knife with sheath, and sharpener from Amazon.com in recent court documents within this time frame. (Source)
July/August 2022: It is reported that the defendant moved to his apartment in Pullman, Washington at some point July or early August. I've pulled this from various sources but cannot, unfortunately, validate the actual date he moved to the area.
August 21st, 2022, 10:34 PM - 11:35 PM: The defendant's cell phone records show it's location to be around the King Road Residence area. According to the affidavit, his phone records indicated he was in the area on at least twelve separate occasions leading up to the murders which occurred on November 13th, 2022. However, this has since been contested in the Franks Motion Hearing document where it is stated that law enforcement failed to mention that cell towers covering King Road, also cover the entirety of Moscow, an area where the defendant is known to shop. Therefore, there is no way of knowing if these cell phone records indicate intent or if the defendant was merely shopping/driving through the area. (Source)
August 21st, 2022, 11:37 PM: The defendant is detained at a traffic stop in Moscow, Idaho (Farm Road and Pullman Highway), driving 2015 Hyundai Elantra, license plate PA-LFZ8649. He provided his phone number as 509-592-8458 with carrier AT&T. The defendant is also given a citation, according to Idaho iCourt Portal, for not wearing a seat belt (NOTE: I was unable to provide a direct link from Idaho's ICourt Portal due to the way their website is designed - i.e. - You would have to search for him yourself to see the citation after clicking on the source). (Source) (Source)
September 23rd, 2022: It is reported that the defendant has an altercation with professor Snyder, a faculty member he supports at Washington State University (Source)
October 14th, 2022, 4:32 PM: The defendant is detained as part of a traffic stop by a WSU Police Officer in the Campus parking lot. He is driving a 2015 Hyundai Elantra, license plate PA-LFZ8649. (Source) (Video)
November 12th, 2022, 9:00 PM: Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle arrive at the Sigma Chi house on the University of Idaho campus at 735 Nez Perce Drive. (Source)
November 12th, 2022, 10:00 PM: Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen enter the Corner Club at 202 N. Main Street, in
Moscow (seen by video footage). (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 1:30 AM to 1:53 AM: Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen leave the Corner Club and can be seen on video at a local food vendor called the "Grub Truck" at 318 S. Main Street in downtown Moscow. (Source) (Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 1:45 AM: Chapin and Xana Kernodle return to 1122 King Road. (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 1:56 AM: Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen are given a ride to 1122 King Road. (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 2:10:29 AM: Mortensan texts E.G. (Uber Driver) inquiring if he is driving. (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 2:13:00 AM: E.G. texts Mortensan confirming he is driving. (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 2:44 AM: A security camera at Washington State University (WSU) campus in Pullman, WA allegedly observes (by video camera) the defendant's vehicle traveling north on southeast Nevada Street at northeast Stadium Way. It is unclear whether the State will be relying on this evidence anymore. (Source) (Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 2:47 AM (or 2:54 AM, per Defendant's experts): The defendant's cell phone stops reporting to the network (turned off/no signal/airplane mode). (Source) (Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 2:53 AM: Mogen Calls Funke. The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) traveling southeast on Nevada Street in Pullman, WA towards SR 270. SR 270 connects Pullman, Washington to Moscow, Idaho. It is unclear whether the State will be relying on this evidence anymore. (Source) (Source #2) (Source #3)
November 13th, 2022, 3:02 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) on State Route 270, between Pullman Washington and Moscow, Idaho, by video cameras stationed at Floyd's Cannabis Co., according to State documents. (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 3:26 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) traveling westbound, along the 700 block of Indian Hills Drive in Moscow. It is unclear whether the State will be relying on this evidence anymore. (Source) (Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 3:28 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) traveling westbound, along Styner Avenue at Idaho State Highway 95 in Moscow. I believe this to be the same footage being relied upon in the State's recent documents that originated from Sunset Mart on 1311 S. Main Street in Moscow.(Source) (Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 3:29 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) entering the King Road Residence area for the first time. The address of the video camera is 1320 Linda Lane, according to State documents. (Source) (Source #2) (Video Link)
November 13th, 2022, 3:30 AM to 4:00 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) around the King Road Residence, via the camera located at 1330 Linda Lane, according to State documents. Reviewing the video footage from 1330 Linda Lane, there is three specific moments where a vehicle is traveling west from Queen Road and turns right, past the entrance of the Queen Road apartments. If you look specifically at the vehicle's windows, just before and after it passes the white post, all three appear to be the same vehicle and, more specifically, a white Hyundai Elantra. The time from the defendant's vehicle sighting on the 1320 Linda Lane camera to the 3:30 AM footage of a vehicle on the 1330 Linda Lane footage also seems to line up, being 1 minute apart. I've provided the timestamps and the video links below so you can do your own analysis.(Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 3:51 AM: Mortensan creates a new contact in her phone. (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 3:59 AM: Xana Kernodle receives DoorDash order from Jack in the Box. (Source) (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 4:05 to 4:07 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) entering the King Road Residence area. There are two events worth noting and both appear to be the same car, a white Hyundai Elantra. I've noted them below so you can do your own analysis. This also puts the time of the murders at no earlier than 4:07 AM. (Source) (Video Link)
November 13th, 2022, 4:07 AM to 4:17 AM: Surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen said she heard who she thought was Goncalves say something to the effect of "there's someone here." A review of cell records obtained say Kernodle was likely awake and using the TikTok app at approximately 4:12. Dylan stated she opened her door a second time when she heard what she thought was crying coming from Kernodle's room. Mortensen then said she heard a male voice say something to the effect of "it's OK, I'm going to help you." (Source)
November 13th, 2022, 4:17 AM - 4:20 AM: A security camera, less than fifty feet from the west wall of Kernodle's bedroom, picks up voices, or a whisper, followed by a loud 'thud'. Dylan Mortensen stated she opened her door for the third time and saw a figure clad in black clothing and a mask that covered the person's mouth and nose walking towards her. Dylan described the figure as 5'10" or taller, male, not very muscular, but athletically built with bushy eyebrows. (Source) (Source #2)
November 13th, 2022, 4:20 AM to 4:21 AM: The defendant's vehicle is allegedly observed (by video camera) departing the King Road Residence area at a high rate of speed. Reviewing the footage, I believe the camera at 1330 Linda Lane is only picking up the audio of the vehicle driving away, at around 4:21:20 AM (Video Link). Mortensan calls Kernodle twice (with no answer) and Funke for 41 seconds.(Source) (Source #2)

And it was, like, they had a ski mask that was covering their forehead, and their chin, and mouth. But I could see the – I – all I remember was seeing their eyebrows. And I don’t – I don’t remember what their eyes looked like, but I remember their eyebrows. I don’t remember the color the eyebrows were. I just remember, like, bushy eyebrows. That’s all I could think about."
Mortensen then described the male as "skinny tone, that basketball kind of type". She stated she was 5'10" tall so she thought the male was "around 5'10" and then 6', somewhere around there". In reference to how close the male was, she stated "I would say about 3 feet, from what I remember. Again, that could be m- m- off cause I - obviously, probably still a little bit drunk. I just woke up. I don't remember fully." She went on to again describe the male, "I know he looked at me 'cause I could see his eyebrows. I think it - I think I just - I think I just saw one eyebrow. I don't know w- why or how".
Captain Blaker then asked Mortensen what was covering the male's face, in which she responded:
"I don’t know…weird-looking ski mask. It wasn’t like the regular ski mask with, like, eyes and, you know, because I saw his eyebrows, and I could –I think I saw his nose and, like, this part of his face, but I don’t know"
In response to whether Mortensen could see the male's mouth:
"No. And I don’t remember if I saw it – like I don’t remember if I saw his nose, but I know I saw eyebrows. And I don’t remember his eyes. I just feel like I can see eyebrows, but I mean, that could be it. I mean, that would make sense why the forehead was covered and this part of his face was covered."
Investigator's then asked if Mortensen could provide a composite for an artist, in which she replied:
"No, I don’t’ remember what his eyes looked like. I don’t remember what his nose looked like. I just remember eyebrows. I don’t know exactly what the eyebrows looked like at all really. I just remember thinking, like, eyebrows. … Yeah, bushy, but that’s all -- like I don’t remember the shape. I don’t remember, like, the color. I just remember, like, bushy eyebrows. That’s the only thing I can remember."
November 17th, 2022: Autopsies were conducted by the Latah County Coroner. Their cause and manner of death as homicide by stabbing. The coroner stated the four victims were likely asleep, some had defensive wounds, and each was stabbed multiple times. There was no sign of sexual assault. (Source)
- *This seems to contradict the evidence, i.e. the DoorDash order at 4AM by Xana and the ""it's ok, I'm going to help you." comment supposedly made by the defendant. Based on this, we can safely assume Xana was awake at the time of the murders.

November 25th, 2022: Moscow Police asked law enforcement to be on the lookout for white Hyundai Elantras in the area. According to the affidavit, the only reason I can find for this is because of the initial video canvas conducted in and around the King Residence Area at the time of the murders and the discovery of a white Hyundai with no front license plates. (Source)
- *The first press release mentioning the Hyundai (that I could find) is from December 7th, 2022, however, there is evidence I found during the Franks Hearing Motion that indicate the FBI was looking for this make and model well before December 7th. That's here (pages 18 & 19).
November 29, 2022, 12:28 AM: Washington State University (WSU) Police Officer, Daniel Tiengo, searches for any white Elantras (the defendant's car's make and model) registered at WSU. December 1st, 2022: Forensic Interviewer Erin Williamson interviews Dylan Mortensen (Source). She describes the ski mask as:
"I couldn’t see any of his hair…But I remember just like, seeing like, it was like, almost rectangular like not the circle ones. … It was rectangular ‘cause I remember seeing like, just like, I don’t know how to explain it. Just seeing like, this. Maybe, I’d be able to see like, a cross. But I don’t’ remember seeing his eyes, but I feel like his eyes were there. I could just see like, an eyebrow. I feel like that’s how I know he saw me ‘cause I could see his eyebrow. Like, if I can see his eyebrow, he can see me."
Mortensen then reiterates:
"From what I remember, I think he was like just, like, walking past that little wall and going towards the kitchen. And I don’t know – like I just remember seeing an eyebrow. I don’t know why I just see one -- it was just, like, one bushy eyebrow. I don’t remember the color, like the full shape. I just remember it being bushy."
Mortensen then describes the male's clothing as black long sleeves, black pants and black boots. She gave a consistent description of the mask and noted the eyebrows: "I don't remember if I saw one or two. Like, it was - it was just weird"

"I have no clue. From what I remember, I just remember seeing this figure that was, like, not fat, obviously but more of like the skinnier tone build, and some mask on. I don’t know what the mask exactly was. But when I thought about it, it was just, like, covering here and here. I don’t know if it was covering his mouth, his nose, or below his mouth and nose. I just remember knowing that he was white, but I didn’t know how he was white. I just knew he was. And this knowing there’s -- like I knew he had looked at me because of the bushy eyebrow. That’s all I remember. … But I have no idea what he looked like. I don’t like --when I looked at his picture, nothing came back to me at all. So that like -- I don’t know. I feel like if I saw that, my mind would be like, oh, yeah, that’s him, but it just – I don’t remember at all."
Regarding Mortensen telling Funke the male had a big nose, Mortensen stated:
"All I remember…but I don’t remember big nose at all, like at all. That’s like – all I remember is like some bushy eyebrow in all black and some sort of mask, but it wasn’t like one of those circle ski masks. That’s all I remember."

"a figure in all black, which I believe was a person. … I knew the person was white. I don’t know how, but I just knew it. Knew it was male. I think I knew that because of the voice. The person was around my height or a few inches taller. … And then I knew his build wasn’t like scrawny, and he wasn’t fat, so I figured it was like the basketball toned, lean build."
Regarding what the person was wearing, Mortensen testified:
"There was like, form what I think I remember, it was like a black mask, almost like a ski mask, but not – it just like covered the head, and then maybe up to the mouth, maybe more. I can’t remember if it covered just the chin, the mouth, or the nose or lower."
She testified the clothing was "all black" and "Well, the thing I can really remember was something about a bushy eyebrow. I don’t remember seeing anything else, just something about a bushy eyebrow."

March 10th, 2025: The defendant agrees to not raise any issues related to IGG evidence and the State agrees it will only seek to introduce evidence/testimony that law enforcement received a “tip”, without mention of the source or substance of the tip, and that law enforcement then followed up and identified the Defendant. March 17th, 2025: The defendant reinforces his alibi (which was originally submitted July 24th, 2023, in that he was driving south and west of Moscow, at the times of the murders. (Source)
March 17th, 2025: The defendant argues that the State did not disclose the entire picture, as related to the text messages and phone activity for Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, and that their activity directly contradicts the State's argument that the texts are not considered hearsay since they represent excited utterances and present sense impressions. (Source)
March 21st, 2025: The State argues: The Defendant’s objection/response to the State’s motion offers nothing new or substantively different. In fact, Defendant appears to now acknowledge that he does not have any witnesses (potentially other than himself) to establish where the Defendant was “at the time of the alleged offense” as required by Idaho Code § 19-519 and I.C.R. 12.1: “partial corroboration does not cover the time alleged in the State’s charging documents or any affidavit in support of searching and seizing Mr. Kohberger’s person or property.” Because of this, the State pushes to have an order preventing the defendant from providing any evidence in support of his alibi except for the defendant's own testimony. April 9th, 2025: Motions hearing (I'll try and transcribe what took place in an accurate, readable way).
- Defendant's motion to prohibit excessive uses of terms such as murder and psychopath and sociopath - the judge agrees to the non-use of psychopath/sociopath unless there is some sort of supporting diagnosis; calling the defendant a "murderer" also something that should be avoided, however usage of the term 'murder' as it applies to the charges is acceptable.
- Defendant's motion to prohibit inflammatory evidence that may sway juror's emotions - the judge cites rules of evidence, expects evidence will reflect brutality of crime; evidence that may be unnecessary can be reviewed beforehand, etc. Judge notes motion is to broad to be accepted.
- State's motion to not have the characterization that the "State is trying to kill Kohberger".
- Defendant's motion to exclude the DeSalles paper per 404b, however, 404b doesn't exclude this evidence since it isn't anchored to a 'bad act'. The same goes for the Defendant's Amazon activity.
- Defendant's motion to exclude traffic stop on August 21st, 2022 because it reveals such information as the make/model of the defendant's car, the defendant's phone number, etc. and would be 'overly prejudicial'. The judge rules that the items presented by the defense are not all covered under 404b since there is another relevance to the traffic stop video, i.e. identity and ownership of the vehicle. However, the judge IS concerned about some of the interactions between the officer and the defendant on the video, so the non-pertinent information to the case should be redacted.
- Defendant's motions to not allow his family to be used as witnesses and to be allowed in the court room. State has intentions to call a few of the family members as witnesses. Judge will take these matters under consideration.
- Defendant's motion to not allow clothing that is pro-death penalty or pro-firing squad. State has no objection and trusts judge's decision on decorum.
- Defendant's motion to not allow his autism to be used as an aggravator, especially if there is a penalty phase to the trial. The State opposes the order but also states it does not intend to use the defendant's Autism as an aggravator. The judge rules that the State should not use the Defendant's Autism diagnosis, in itself, as an aggravator.
- State's motion that the defendant can't introduce alternate perpetrator evidence without first notifying the court and offering proper evidence supporting this. The Defendant argues they do not intend to introduce an alternate perpetrator without proper evidence and time given. The judge intends to set a deadline pertaining to this for the Defendant.
- Defendant argues regarding the DNA found under the fingernails of the victim as not being the defendant's. The State counters this stating it does not intend to claim the DNA under the fingernails is, in any way, the defendant's.
- The Defendant argues to not use the term 'touch DNA' or 'contact DNA' (likely to credit their argument that the Defendant's DNA was 'transferred' to the sheathe instead of put there first hand). This motion that the Defendant is proposing actually goes against the Defendant's own expert testimony. Judge encourages both sides to not use the terms, as much as they can, but also says that jurors are often underestimated in their own abilities of understanding what is or isn't something and, therefore, he won't be policing the testimonies of the experts.
- Defendant argues against the term "suspect vehicle #1" in relation to all of the clips that the State will be using to prove their case. They contest that it is impossible to say that all the vehicles in the video clips are the same vehicle and want to prohibit the State from doing so. The State argues that their experts opinion IS that they are all of the same vehicle. The judge says that the State should not be making conclusions outside of closing statements, however, he does not feel that saying "suspect vehicle #1" is the same as inferring that the vehicle is the same in every video. He will write up an analysis regarding this motion.
- Defendant argues against the term "bushy eyebrow" and that Mortensan's testimonies are unreliable. State argues against this. Judge will take under advisement and issue a statement regarding.
- State argues entire 911 call should be admitted as 'excited utterance'. Defendant argues against this. Judge rules surviving roommates were under stress, but, may redact certain elements of the 911 call.
- State argues to be able to use text messages from Mortensan and Funke as 'excited utterance'. Defense argue against. Judge will look at each piece of evidence and rule.
- State argues the use of their model as demonstrative evidence, which might not be to scale, so that witnesses and other people who testify can point out where certain events happened in a more concise manner. Defense opposes it. Judge will allow the model and make it accessible to the Defendant.
- State argues that the defendant still hasn't complied with a proper alibi, with the best they have being "the defendant was out driving around". Defendant argues they have partial collaboration on where he was (per Sy Ray, up until 2:54 AM) but none after. Judge rules ff the Defendant comes up with some other alibi concerning the times after 2:54 AM they are required to immediately disclose it to the court and the decision of it is admissible will be determined afterwards.
- Defendant accuses State to receiving AT&T Timing Advance Records for Bryan Kohberger in December (based on Sy Ray affidavit), essentially hiding evidence, however, there is no evidence of that at all. The judge goes further to call Sy Ray's affidavit as inflammatory and 'conspiracy theory'.
- Defendant argues about the 7 minute period (2:47 to 2:54) discrepancy in the phone records, claiming it depicts the Defendant's route of travel as being wrong. I believe this will be resolved in full by judge at a later date.
- Defendant argues about the DNA on the handrail not being tested. I believe this will be resolved in full by judge at a later date.
- Defendant argues State has not disclosed their expert witness testimonies. The State vehemently disagrees. Judge will take both parties arguments under advisement.
- Defendant argues the Amazon Click/Data shouldn't be admissible, indicating that A.I. had something to do with the knife appearing in the defendant's shopping cart. The Judge declares they are welcome to state their case during closing arguments. There are no grounds to exclude the testimony of the State's experts concerning the Amazon data since it's not based on opinion but fact.
- The State argues the defendant's stance of using Autism as an excuse for how the defendant acts and behaves without any basis. Defendant argues against State. Judge will take both sides into advisement.
- Defendant then argues against death penalty due to Autism. The State cites that the national consensus is that ASD is NOT protected against the death penalty.
- The judge counters the defendant's argument that they haven't gone through all discovery yet, citing why Ann Taylor would have taken on a new death penalty case when she still hasn't reviewed all the evidence in this case. This conversation lasts the entirety of the rest of the hearing.
Evidence (Detailed)
Here I'll try and lay out all the evidence (as I have found) that is being used, has been collected or has been implied by sealed/redacted court documents.
DNA On Sheath
According to Officer Brett Payne's affidavit, upon entering Madison Mogen's bedroom on the third floor of the King Road Residence, he noticed a tan leather knife sheath laying on the bed next to Mogen's right side. The sheath had "Ka-Bar" & "USMC" and the United State's Marine Corps eagle globe and anchor insignia stamped on the outside of it. The defendant later challenged this affidavit in their Franks Hearing Motion, stating that Idaho State Police were the ones who actually located and collected the sheath, not Officer Payne, per this statement from Sergeant Blaker: "I was later advised by ISP investigators they located a tan leather knife sheath laying on the bed next to Mogen's right side".
However, the courts ruled that this was, essentially, 'a quibble over nothing more than semantics'. Officer Payne was the one to initially discover the sheathe and then notified Idaho State Police officers to collect it. It was found that in no way does this small detail constitute a malicious misrepresentation or reckless omission, which was the defendant's burden to prove.
Subsequently, the Idaho State Lab identified a single source of male DNA left on the button snap of the leather sheath. This DNA was later tested against CODIS by the Idaho State Police Forensics Lab. When this produced no hits, the sample was given, in person, on November 22nd, 2022, to Othram Labs, too be involved in the next steps of testing. Othram stopped work on December 10th, 2022 after finding two main DNA matches. However, those matches were low: 70.7 and 60 centimorgans. Their recommendation was to test 1 of 4 brothers within the family tree of the two main matches to get a better picture of where the DNA found at the crime scene might fit. The brother's names were redacted, but it is known, during the IGG Hearing that was held on January 23rd, 2025, that the last name of these 4 brothers was not 'Kohberger'.
The FBI, who took over the IGG work soon after, had better results, and a phone call was made on December 19th, 2022 informing law enforcement to look into Bryan Kohberger. It was later learned that the FBI had violated TOS by using the public versions of both GEDMatch and MyHeritage to get these results and the defendant motioned to have the evidence suppressed, along with all evidence that was collected based on the FBI's findings. The courts ruled that the FBI had not broken any laws, only the TOS of both GEDMatch and MyHeritage, therefore the evidence stayed.
On March 10th, 2025, The Defendant agreed to not raise any more issues related to IGG evidence and the State agreed it would only seek to introduce evidence that law enforcement received a “tip”, without mention of the source or substance of the tip.
DNA in Kohberger Residence Garbage
On December 27, 2022, Pennsylvania Agents recovered trash from the Kohberger family residence located in Albrightsville, PA. On December 28,2022 the Idaho State Lab reported a DNA match from the sheath found at the crime scene, to the garbage and recognized this match as being to Mr. Kohberger's father. This was the last bit of evidence, per the affidavit, that was submitted to gain an arrest warrant for Bryan Kohberger.
Video Surveillance Evidence
The affidavit from law enforcement lists numerous surveillance cameras capturing the defendant's car. I've listed them below for convenience sake. If this evidence is accurate, it would directly contradict the defendant's statement of not having been in the vicinity of the murders, at the time they occurred.
- August 21st, 2022: The defendant is detained as part of a traffic stop in Moscow, Idaho. The defendant is driving a 2015 Hyundai Elantra with Pennsylvania plates. During this stop, his cell phone number is also recorded. Law enforcement is able to later use this information to further their investigation by way of tracking the defendant's movements via AT&T GPS.
- November 13th, 2:44 AM: The defendant's vehicle is seen traveling north on southeast Nevada Street at northeast Stadium Way at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. It is unclear whether the State will be relying on this evidence anymore.
- November 13th, 2:53 AM: The defendant's vehicle is seen traveling southeast on Nevada Street in Pullman, WA towards SR 270. It is unclear whether the State will be relying on this evidence anymore.
- November 13th, 3:02 AM: The defendant's vehicle is observed on State Route 270, between Pullman and Moscow, by video cameras at Floyd's Cannabis Co.
- November 13th, 3:26 AM: The defendant's vehicle is observed traveling westbound in the 700 block of Indian Hills Drive in Moscow, Idaho. It is unclear whether the State will be relying on this evidence anymore.
- November 13th, 3:28 AM: The defendant's vehicle is observed traveling westbound on Styner Avenue at Idaho State Highway 95 in Moscow, Idaho.
- November 13th, 3:30 AM, 3:39 AM & 3:56 AM: The defendant's vehicle is seen multiple times in and around the King Road Neighborhood. These sightings show defendant's vehicle makes an initial three passes by the 1122 King Road residence and then leaves via Walenta Drive.
- November 13th, 4:05 AM: The defendant's vehicle is seen driving eastbound on King Road, stopping and turning around in front of 500 Queen Road #52 and then driving back westbound on King Road.

- November 13th, 4:21 AM: The defendant's vehicle is seen/heard departing the King Road Residence area at a high rate of speed.

Cell Phone GPS Evidence
The affidavit from law enforcement lists GPS evidence of the movements of the defendant, based on historical cell site location information (CSLI) for the defendant's phone, between November 12th, 2022 and November 13th, 2022. I've listed that data below for convenience sake.
- November 13th, 2:42 AM: phone utilizing cellular resources that provide coverage to 1630 Northeast Valley Road, Apt G201, Pullman, WA.
- November 13th, 2:47 AM (or 2:54 AM, according to Franks) Defendant's cell phone is off or the network is disabled, last pinging southeast of the defendant's Residence.
- November 13th, 4:48 AM: phone utilizing cellular resources that provide coverage to Idaho State Highway 95, South of Moscow, Idaho near Blaine, ID (north of Genesee).
- November 13th, 4:50 AM to 5:26 AM: GPS data consistent with traveling south on Idaho State Highway 95 to Genesee, ID, then traveling west towards Uniontown, Idaho, and then north back into Pullman, Washington.
- November 13th, 5:30 AM: GPS data consistent with the phone traveling back to the Kohberger Residence in Pullman, Washington.
- November 13th, 9:00 AM: GPS data consistent with phone leaving Pullman, Washington.
- November 13th, 9:12 AM to 9:21 AM: Phone utilizing cellular resources that provide coverage to Kings Road Residence.
- November 13th, 9:32 AM: GPS data consistent with the phone traveling back to the Kohberger Residence in Pullman, Washington.
If we were to coordinate the GPS data we have from the affidavit to the video surveillance evidence, it certainly seems to line up. Of particular notice to me is the video footage of the defendant's car being seen departing the King Road Residence at 4:21 AM, and the defendant's phone reactivating around 4:48 AM near Blaine, Idaho. According to Google Maps, this trip could have taken anywhere from 18 to 23 minutes, depending on the route, which is well within the 27 minute window given between the two events.

The Use Of IGG
IGG, or Investigative Genetic Genealogy, played an important role in this case, although it was left out of the original documentation provided by Officer Brett Payne. I've tried to relay some of the more important details and quotes related to this and how it helped form the opinion that the defendant was the main Person of Interest in this case below. For the most part, this initial tip, given by the FBI to Law Enforcement on December 19th, 2022, was what guided Law Enforcement to look at the defendant as a suspect. Kohberger's Defense argued that the FBI ignored internal federal policy by submitting DNA to the public versions of GEDMatch and MyHeritage and that Kohberger's constitutional rights had been violated (a violation of the 4th Amendment). However, the judge ruled that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy for evidence collected at a crime scene. Furthermore, the FBI's use of the public databases only violated term of services, not any laws.
Transcript From Hearing on January 23rd, 2025
A hearing was held on January 23rd, in relation to the Law Enforcement's and the FBI's use of IGG. Below are excerpts from Page 9 & Page 15, where it is discovered that Law Enforcement had no suspect until the FBI gave them the 'tip', based on their use of IGG. You can view the entire testimony here: 022125-Transcript-Redacted-hearing-held-Jan23-2025.pdf

- Payne: "The first time I heard Bryan Kohberger's name was December 19, 2022."
- Taylor: "And what was that a result of?"
- Payne: "That was a result of investigative genetic genealogy that was being undertaken by the FBI. We had a phone call that evening, and we were told Bryan Kohberger's name."
- Taylor: "And before that, Mr. Kohberger was not on your radar?"
- Payne: "No, ma'am."
Page 15
- Taylor: "All right. So once you have Mr. Kohberger identified, what's your understanding of what that meant to have his name?"
- Payne: "Just in relation to the overall investigation, is that --"
- Taylor: "Yes."
- Payne: "So the only thing that was given to us was Bryan Kohberger's name; that was it. It was conveyed to us by the FBI that it was to be taken as no more than a tip; that was it. So once we received his name, we set about doing basically an independent verification of whether or not he was involved in this crime."
Additional DNA Profiles Discovered
The transcript from the January 23rd, 2025 hearing also mentions two other DNA profiles, which were not pursued, and still remain unknown ( i believe) to this day, as to whom they belong to (pages 18-19). (Source)
Note: I have yet to re-review the evidence found at the scene regarding the additional DNA profiles found. I will though. I promise!

- Unknown Male D: Came from a sample of blood on some gloves outside the house.
Addressing The Franks Hearing Motion
I thought it wise to summarize the Franks Hearing Motion put forth by the defendant's Defense. I'm going to (try and) walk through each of the Defense's claims, and the whether that Franks burden was met, based on this document, i.e. the Defendant's Motion for a Franks Hearing. Also, to explain quickly, a Franks Motion is basically an attempt to null and void a search warrant and suppress all the evidence found subsequently, based on the idea that there was intentional and reckless disregard for the truth used to obtain probable cause. The defense's motion was denied (except in the case of the Frank's Hearing on IGG on January 23rd, 2025) but I'm going to (once again try) to walk through the key sections anyways, for clarification of what the Defense brought up.
Challenges to Exhibit A - Section A, Page 5
- The defendant argued that the initial affidavit submitted was "treated as a wild card to easily get a search warrant". It was found that this was not the case. The affidavit was a working document and was contributed to (and sworn to) by multiple officers working on the case. No evidence was found that anything in the affidavit was intentionally or recklessly misinterpreted or contained omissions of the same nature.
- The defendant argues that Officer Payne attributes the discovery of the knife to Idaho State Police officers, rather than to himself, because of Sergeant Blaker's statement: "I was later advised by ISP investigators they located a tan leather knife sheath located on the bed next to Mogen's right side". However, This was found to be 'a quibble over nothing more than semantics'. Officer Payne was the one to initially discover the sheathe and then notified Idaho State Police officers to collect it. It was found that in no way does this small detail constitute a malicious misrepresentation or reckless omission.
- The defendant argues that detectives stated they did the work to determine if the defendant's cell phone was in the area of the crime scene when it was, in fact, FBI agent Nicholas Ballance. However, it is was found that even if Agent Ballance is the one who did the work, that does not render the detective's statements as intentionally or recklessly false, or even misleading since they do state they were able to determine the locations after consulting with the FBI.
Eyewitness Testimonies - Section B, Page 9
- The defendant argues that Law Enforcement failed to mention to the magistrate that Dylan Mortensen's memory was questionable and that she failed to ID the defendant when a photo of him was provided. However, the cross-examination of a witness's testimony is a subject for trial, not a Franks Hearing. Furthermore, the witness not being able to ID the Defendant via a photo is reasonable given the intruder was masked. The defendant's own evidence, as well as the affidavit, establishes Dylan Mortensan's account to be very consistent.
- The defendant argues Dylan Mortensan's ability to properly remember the events that happened. She is quoted as saying the following when recounting events: "Again, I believe I was also very drunk. I don't know how much of this is real. Like I don't know if my mind was, like, doing whatever. I don't know any of it. Like half this stuff don't know if it's dream or if it's real. I just have no clue." However, The law does not favor the defendant on this argument. Probable cause is determined by examining the totality of the circumstances, law enforcement found her statements credible enough and the bulk of probable cause was indicated to come from other sources. Arguing Mortensan's account is something that would be better served during the trial, when the Defense is able to cross-examine her.
Vehicle Identification - Section C, Page 17
- The defendant found issue with the fact that the FBI's vehicle specialist 'felt more comfortable' with a 2011-2013 date range for the suspect's vehicle, however, this wasn't disclosed as such and, instead was worded: "After reviewing the numerous observances of Suspect Vehicle 1, the vehicle specialists initially believed that Suspect Vehicle was a 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra. Upon further review, they indicated it could also be a 2011-2016 Hyundai Elantra." The defendant feels this omission is exculpatory and that the date range of the vehicle was only changed once the IGG/DNA evidence came into play, which directly pointed a finger at the defendant. However, the court has decided this is not the case. The change in date ranges came directly from Agent Imel himself, on November 26th, 2022, over email exchanges, well before December 19th, when the defendant was identified through IGG.
- The defendant challenges that the FBI's vehicle specialist's identification of the suspect's vehicle is based on video footage from "Ridge Road" (which law enforcement knew/should have known was not the suspect's vehicle) based on email chains and an attachment of a photo from the Ridge Road footage, calling it "A GREAT one!". However, they lacked sufficient evidence to prove there were any attachments, let alone (assuming there were) that they were from the Ridge Road footage. Neither is there any evidence that the FBI or Law Enforcement intentionally misidentified the suspect's car to obtain a warrant.
Dog Barking - Section E, Page 22
- Defendant challenges that the affidavit's omit the fact that at 4:17AM (security camera event), the dog continued to bark for thirty minutes after the suspect had left and had no blood on it when it was found, despite the bedroom door where the deceased (Kaylee Goncalves) was found being wide open. The defendant argues that this means someone must have brought the dog inside AFTER the suspect's vehicle had already left since, according to affidavits, the dog was inside the bedroom at the time law enforcement arrived on the scene, which would make the timeline invalid. However, there was no proof, either way, that the dog was ever outside, just that it could be heard on the security camera. Furthermore, to even make sense, this argument would assume that there were no doors or windows left open after the suspect had left. The evidence, so far, is contrary as the sliding glass door, the same door toward which Dylan Mortensan reportedly saw the suspect walk through, was found open.
Cell Phone Data - Section F, Page 23
- The defendant argues that Officer Payne's explanation that criminals will turn off or leave their cell phone elsewhere before committing crimes as to why the defendant's phone NOT utilizing cellular tower resources in close proximity to the King Road Residence between between the hours of (approximately) 3 AM and 5 AM is "highly speculative and conclusory". The defendant argues that it is just as likely that the phone was not present in the area. However, Officer Payne's assumptions are based on his training and experience and are not found to be intentionally or recklessly misleading by the court.
- The defendant's expert, Thomas Slovenski, argues that the time it took for the records to be obtained (roughly 1 hour) is way to short, as it would take 1 to 2 days at a minimum to secure and analyze call details from AT&T and that FBI must have already had this data in hand. It is determined that this sort of accusation has no room in a Frank's hearing, especially considering Mr. Slovenski was not involved in the investigation in any way, nor had any evidence to back up his claims.
- Defendant asserts that Officer Payne misrepresents the time that the defendant's phone goes offline, to imply that the defendant was traveling toward Moscow between 2:47AM and 2:54AM, when, in fact he was not. The defendant's expert, Thomas Slovenski, argues that there is 7 more minutes of traffic after 2:47AM, ending at 2:54AM, and indicating that the suspect's vehicle was instead (according to the cell phone traffic) heading southbound from Pullman, Washington, NOT in the direction of Moscow, Idaho. Another of the defendant's experts, Sy Ray, corroborates this data. The court ruled that the data in the affidavit was not intentionally or recklessly misleading. Officer Payne noted he was not an expert in these matters and that his time stated was an approximation. Moreover, the affidavit actually agreed with the defendant's statement that the defendant's car was traveling southbound from Pullman, Washington, despite what may or may not have been 'implied'. The 7 minute discrepancy also doesn't rule out that the suspect could have turned around and headed to Moscow, Idaho at any time after 2:54AM, since this was roughly an hour before the murders. There is also video evidence of the suspect's car in and around the time of the murders.
- The defendant argues that Officer Payne omitted that fact that the cell towers that cover King ROad, also cover the entirety of Moscow, an area where the defendant is known to shop. The courts concluded that while including this information could shed some doubt on whether the defendant visited the King Road location twelve times, as was stated by Officer Payne when he said "The records for the 8458 Phone show the 8458 Phone utilizing cellular resources that provide coverage to the area of 1122 King Road on at least twelve occasions prior to November 13, 2022.", it is not enough evidence to prove that Officer Payne deliberately mislead.
NOTE: I'd also like to interject that the defendant's argument that the car was not headed in the direction of Moscow doesn't really mean much considering there are various alternate routes to Moscow going south from Pullman, including, but not limited to, via Old Moscow Road and via Sands Road.
Footprint Outside Dylan Mortensan's Door - Section G, Page 30
- The defendant argues that the footprint outside the sliding door positioning is slightly inaccurate and there are no other footprints. The court found nothing false or misleading about Detective Payne's statement. The shoe print was consistent with D.M.'s account.
Grand Jury Subpoenas - Section H - Page 31
- Defendant claims Detective Mowery did not disclose unidentified particulars about the timing and scope of information obtained from the Grand Jury Subpoenas, in regards to the search warrants obtained for Amazon records on May 8, 2023. However, the defendant does not provide any evidence and cannot even show what was ommited. The court recognizes this an attempt to use Franks as a means for discovery, which is not its purpose.
Lack of Connection Between Defendant and Victims - Section I, Page 31
- The defendant argues that there is no known connection between the defendant and the victims. The courts rule that while no connection had been found, this does not mean there wasn't probable cause.
Lack of Victim DNA in Apartment and Vehicle - Section J - Page 32
- The defense argues that the lack of DNA evidence, both at the crime scene, and in the defendant's apartment. The defendant contends that it would affect all warrants issued January 5, 2023 and beyond, but fails to provide any search warrants during this time period for the court to consider. Furthermore, given the DNA evidence they DO have, no reasonable magistrate would conclude that the lack of victim DNA in Defendant's vehicle and/or apartment weeks after the crime would negate probable cause.
Defendant's ID by IGG - Section K - Page 34
- The defendant claimed that the FBI's use of commercial IGG databases was unconstitutional and the omission of these searches was deliberately misleading. The court permitted a full Franks hearing on January 23rd, 2025. The results of that hearing were that the FBI's use of the public databases only violated term of services, not any laws. Furthermore, the inclusion of this information would have served to only reinforce probably cause, not detract from it, given the results of the DNA testing.
Theories & Other Findings
This section is reserved for any theories I, personally might have, or findings, based on any of the evidence I've reviewed. Everything here is purely subjective, on my behalf, and has not been proven by the court system (unless specifically stated). Enjoy.
The Winco Connection
Update: As on 3/24/2025, the state no longer intends to rely on this evidence. It may be there is no connection here between Kohberger and any of the victims or survivors. (Source)
On page 5 of this document, which details certain evidence that has been allowed to be used by the courts, there are the following two items:
- Winco financial records for Bryan Kohberger (AV000861)
- Winco financial records and video surveillance for B.F. DM. Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and/or Xana Kernodle (AV000860; Hard drive for 4/5/23)
It is reasonable to think, based on these two line items, that law enforcement is, at the very least, trying to figure out if any of the victims and the defendant were in the same place at the same time. While I have 'heard' of rumors that one of the victims reported being stalked months earlier, I haven't investigated those claims. Still, the Winco evidence is compelling as it stands out with some of the only evidence that involves the same location (sans the crime scene itself) and both parties involved.
The Defendant's Travel Route
Using the State's evidence they plan to submit, I've tried my best to map out the most logical route of travel that the defendant might have taken the night of the murders. I've also included this data into a shared Google Earth link, however, go easy on me as that data is still under active development!

Travel Route, Version A
UNDER DEVELOPMENT
3:28 AM
Defendant is traveling west, along Styner Avenue. Wording in court documents suggests defendant crosses I-95 and continues west on Lauder Avenue, then turns left onto Taylor Avenue and passes the security camera located at 1320 Linda Lane.
Approx. Time: 1 to 2 minutes
3:29:49 AM
Defendant's car is seen on
Addressing Others' Theories
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people like me who are enamored by the topic of True Crime. Sadly, this obsession can lead to misinformation, wild conspiracy theories and even pollution of the entire well by people who's sole objective is to hijack the narrative (whatever the reason). My goal with this site is to provide evidence and theories that are actually backed by the evidence. This section's goal is to try and refute theories which I find harmful, or even intentionally misaligned, with nothing more than solid evidence and critical thinking.
The Roommates
During my 5 whole minutes on social media regarding this case (in which I became far too angry for my own good at the things I saw people posting), I noticed a lot of fingers being pointed in the direction of the roommates, or even the victims themselves. While I have my own VERY PASSIONATE stance on victim blaming, I can also (to a certain extent) understand the curiosity surrounding the roommates. After all, it only takes one post from one misinformed person to start a world wide rumor these days. Therefore, I'm going to spend only a few paragraphs on the subjects of the delay in calling 911 and the call itself. I WON'T be addressing anything else, in relation to the roommates as I find 99.9% of the things related to them incredulous and without any real evidence other than hearsay. Keep in mind, most of you are about to read are logical rebuttals to speculation, backed up by the evidence on hand.
The Timing of the 911 Call
I've seen people continuously question the 911 call placed by the roommates. Specifically, why it took so long to make it and why there was no mention of the blood or the brutality of the scene OVER the 911 call. While we may not be able to specifically answer these questions, we can take a look at the evidence we do have. Regarding the time it took for the 911 call to be placed, there is no actual evidence that Dylan Mortensan thought she, or her roommates, were in immediate danger. At this point in the case, the interpretation of the evidence is completely up to the individual reviewing it, and I have seen this debated in numerous social media posts.
However, what we do know, According to both the affidavit submitted by Officer Payne, and the State's documents that Dylan was in her bedroom, in the southeast side of he second floor when she was awoken at around 4AM by what she stated sounded like Kaylee Goncalves playing with her dog in one of the upstairs bedrooms. A short time later (At or after 4:12AM), Dylan is reported to have heard the words "there's someone here" from someone she thought was Kaylee Goncalves. However, law enforcement has also stated this could have actually been Xana Kernodle, based on phone records, which showed that Xana was was awake and on Tiktok at around 4:12AM. Dylan is stated as looking out her bedroom door but not seeing anything.
Dylen Mortensan is noted as opening her bedroom door a second time when she reports hearing what she thouht was crying coming from Kernodle's room. She is also stated as hearing a male voice say something to the effect of "It's okay, I'm going to help you."
At 4:17AM, a security camera less than fifty feet from the west wall of Kernodle's bedroom, located at 1112 King Road, a residence immediately to the northwest of 1122 King Road, is noted as picking up what sounds like voices or a whimper followed by a loud thud. A dog can also be heard barking numerous times.
During the Franks Motion set forth by the defendant, it was stated that the dog continued to park for, roughly, thirty minutes. The defendant contested that, since there was no blood found on the dog and the dog was found inside Kaylee Gonvalves bedroom after the murders (and given the length of time the dog can be heard barking for), that it meant someone would have had to have brought the dog back inside after the vehicle reported as the defendant's had already left. However, this was only speculation from the defendant and was not backed up by any evidence. To the best of my knowledge, it was never proven that the dog was ever outside. Nor was there any evidence that the dog (if it were outside at any time) hadn't come back inside, given that the sliding glass door was found to be open the morning after the murders. The explanation as to why the dog had no blood on it, in my opinion, can have as many answers to it as one's imagination can allow. We simply do not know the answer to it or have any concrete evidence either way.
Dylan opens her door a third time after hearing crying and sees a figure in black clothing and a mask covering their mouth and nose walking towards her. She described the figure as 5'10", not very muscular with bushy eyebrows. The male walks past her, towards the glass sliding door. Dylan locks herself in her bedroom at this point, before eventually ending up in Funke's room on the first floor later.
When we look at the text messages that follow, we can clearly see that both Dylan and Bethany are confused as to what is occurring. Bethany, at one point, even says "Xana was wearing all black" during their text exchanges.
The question set forth by people has constantly been "Why didn't either Dylan OR Bethany call 911 the night of the murders?" and, it is a good question, one that Ethan Chapin's sister-in-law even asked, according to this this article. One thing we know is that the Franks Motion Hearing documents did address the legitimacy of Dylan Mortensan's testimony, and, Dylan herself is stated as saying the following when asked to re-tell her accounts of the night -
- "Again, I believe I was also very drunk. I don't know how much of this is real. Like I don't know if my mind was, like, doing whatever. I don't know any of it. Like half this stuff don't know if it's dream or if it's real. I just have no clue."
While we can't know for sure, we can speculate, based on her statements and the text messages, and combined with the general atmosphere of the house (being a college house that had frequent parties) that Dylan may have been too inebriated at the time to interpret what was going on. With that said, we CAN definitely determine, based on the text messages, that both Dylan and Bethany saw someone dressed in all black.
In my opinion, based on the evidence we have, it would appear the decision not to call law enforcement at the time of the murders was nothing more than a bad decision, based on Dylan's immediate interpretation of the situation. In no way do I find any verifiable evidence that the decision to wait to call law enforcement was based on anything nefarious.
Update: On 3/17/2025, the defendant argues that the State's representation of the timeline, specifically the phone activity of both Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, should be considered hearsay and do not meet the burden of being 'excited utterances and present sense impressions'. This is laid out here. While I can't speculate what the outcome will be, I can say that, in my own opinion, I do not believe the added activities 'taint' the State's argument of excited utterances. We don't know the content of these activities, merely that these activities took place. It would be interesting to know the content as, while it could support the defendant's argument, it could just as easily reinforce the State's.
The 911 Call Itself
There has been questions surrounding the 911 call, both when it was just the transcript that had been released, and even now, after the audio has been released. The main question I have seen asked by persons is why it was not immediately mentioned to the 911 operator that there were murders that took place. According to documents we have,
Dylan Mortensan wakes up sometime before 10:23 AM. We know this from text messages showing Dylan attempted to reach both Kaylee Goncalves and Maddie Morgan via text, starting at 10:23:23 AM.
Next event, records show that Dylan texted her father at 11:39:09 (although the contents of that text message have not been revealed). At 11:50:58 AM, Dylan calls her neighbor Emily Alandt. Soon after, Hunter Johnson (Ethan Chapin's friend) and Emily Alandt (Hunter's girlfriend) arrive on scene. It is noted that Hunter Johnson found the body of Xana Kernodle and directed both Dylan Mortensan and Emily Alandt to call 911. There is audio evidence within the 911 call itself that infers that no one besides Hunter had seen Xana's body before, or during, the 911 call that took place. This would explain why neither Dylan or Emily were able to tell the 911 operator anything more than Xana being 'unresponsive'.
See 911 call transcript entries:
- Dylan Mortensan: "Yeah, I'll come - come on. Let's - we gotta go check. But we have to. Is she passed out?
- Hunter Johnson: "Xana! Ethan!"
- Dylan Mortensan: "She's passed out. What's wrong?"
- Dylan Mortensan:: "She's not waking up"
- Hunter Johnson: "Xana!"
- Hunter Johnson: "Get out! Get out! Let's get out!"
* In the above excerpt, it would appear that both Dylan and Emily are outside Xana's bedroom, while Hunter is relaying what is wrong with Xana to them, and they are relying that information to the 911 operator. When the girls do attempt to enter the room, Hunter can be heard telling them to get out.
For every theory regarding why there was no mention of the state of the bodies, there is also a valid theory as to why there wasn't. In my opinion, based on the evidence we have, I find nothing nefarious about the 911 call and believe only Hunter Johnson knew the true condition of Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, at least for the majority of the call. It is anticipated that both Dylan Mortensan and Bethany Funke will testify during trial regarding the events that morning as well as the 911 call itself.
Who Was Brent Lee Kopacka?
On December 15th at 4:22 AM, Brent Lee Kopacka was shot and killed by the Whitman County Regional SWAT Team. He was 36 years old and had previously served in the US Army from 2005 – 2009 in the 2nd Battalion, 508TH Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. During his time in Afghanistan, he suffered a traumatic brain injury which led to a long bout of PTSD up until his death. (Source)
The entire incident seemed to stem from Kopacka threatening to shoot one of his roommates that later led to the 5 hour standoff. The alleged dispatch audio from the event was uploaded here. The standoff itself occurred at Coffee House Apartments at 1000 SE Latah, Pullman, Washington however, there is, at least, some discrepancies with where he was living, given this video, which is body cam footage of law enforcement responding to an 'event' having to do with Kopacka at Room 315 at the Hampton Inn By Hilton in Pullman, Washington on June 29th, 2022.
I evaluated the video and can verify it is Brent Kopacka by the birth date he gives and his appearance, despite spelling his last name K-o-p-a-c-k, In the video, Brent appears to be manic and talks about someone who just got out of jail for murder trying to kill him. He also mentions his address as 1455 NE Brandi Way at the Pimlico, Apartments. As it happens, this is .3 miles from the apartment Bryan Kohberger rented at the time of the murders.
However, that's where the connection ends for me. I couldn't find one shred of evidence linking Brent to Bryan (so far anyways) and, while the discrepancy in where Brent lived in December vs. June is interesting, I couldn't find any records indicating he lived at either apartment. The fact is, he could have simply lived in the Pimlico apartments and moved to the Coffeehouse apartments before the December 15th event. And while it's also interesting that Brent was .3 miles away from Kohberger's apartment, it doesn't really prove much. Could Kohberger have known Kopacka? Sure. Anything is possible.
Sadly, the lack of a connection between Kopacka, Kohberger and the murders didn't prevent armchair detectives from creating their own theories surrounding Kopacka, ranging from him being Kohberger's accomplice to full on conspiracy theories involving drug rings, the FBI and cover-ups. Everything I've found seems to be anecdotal, with absolutely no evidence and that, my friends, is where it stands for me. No evidence = no connection.
The Life of Bryan
Note: Below is an attempt to piece together Bryan Kohberger's life up until the point the Idaho murders took place, based on things I could find, including social media posts, news articles and interviews. At times, I may also interject my own thoughts and theories into these summaries, where I see fit, based on my own subjective experiences. A word of caution, most of this will probably be anecdotal.
Pleasant Valley High School in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania
Bryan Kohberger reportedly lost a large amount of weight just before his senior year at Pleasant Valley High School in Brodheadsville, Pennsylvania.
- “I remember seeing him and thinking it was a new student. He was so heavy and he lost so much weight, he almost looked sickly or like it was an obsession. Around the same time, he became more aggressive and I think he became more of an outcast at that point. He became more withdrawn,” - Dominique Clark, who attended elementary and high school with Kohberger. (Source)
It was also reported by various news agencies who interviewed Bryan's classmates that he was the target of bullying, mainly from the girls in his class. Sarah Healey, a classmate from Pleasant Valley High School, noted that classmates, especially girls, mocked and threw things at him.
- "It was bad," Healey said. "There was definitely something off about him, like we couldn't tell exactly what it was. I remember one time when I was walking in the hallway, and he stopped me and was like, ‘Do you want to hang out?’ It was just weird," she said. "But Bryan was bullied a lot, and I never got a chance to say something to defend him, because he would always run away." (Source)
Rich Pasqua, a former classmate of Kohberger, was quoted as saying the following, in this article:
- "I met him through some friends and they told me that he was a little weird and he was a little socially awkward, I guess you could say, but he wasn't a bad guy," Pasqua said. "He needed a job, so I worked at a pizza shop at that time and they were hiring and I said, ‘Yeah, come on in and apply.’ And he did, and he got the job. So I worked with him for a little bit, but he was quiet, though."
- Pasqua also shared that Kohberger didn't have a girlfriend and that his wife even went to school with him. "They graduated together and she doesn't remember him ever having a girlfriend, and I don't remember him ever having a girlfriend and he didn't have many friends," he continued. "So he, like, would do anything to fit in and would do, like, you know, he just wanted to be liked by everybody. But he wasn't a bad kid, like, you know, he was alright. And I knew his sister. I went to school with his sister and I knew his father worked for the school. And I believe his mother did, too. But his family, they were just, they were all nice people. And, you know, his dad was always really nice to me. Very polite, but, I just — I never thought that he would do something like that."
- In the article, Pasqua also claims Kohberger and him used heroin together. "I got six years clean now," Pasqua said. "I work in treatment and everything, but back then I was using. And so that's how I know for a fact he was using. I've got high with him a couple of times and used with him." Pasqua said he knew other people who dealt drugs and would deliver drugs to Kohberger frequently.
According to Tanya Carmella-Beers, who oversaw student's discipline and mental health at Monroe Career & Technical Institute (MCTI), Bryan Kohberger was removed from the Law Enforcement program during his sophomore year for an incident she labeled "pretty serious". She did not disclose the incident, but stated it did involve other female students. After being dropped from the program, he switched to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), but did not go back his senior year, choosing instead to finish his diploma requirements by way of Pleasant Valley’s online program. (Source)
- “He appeared to be the total package, and he was,” Carmella-Beers said. “Other than that incident, Bryan was a very strong student, performed well and he took his program very seriously. His uniform was immaculate every day, everything about him was perfect, so to speak — everything.” - Tanya Carmella-Beers
Casey Arntz, a high school friend of Bryan, sent a text message accusing him of tricking her into driving him around when he was secretly buying heroin and needles. (Source)
- Arntz: "I would like to hand you a big congratulations for lying to me about driving you around. I should've added it up before hand but thought I was doing something nice for someone. So thank you, if you would've gotten caught, I would've gotten in trouble just for driving you around not even knowing why. Needles for your aunt? Wow. Real great story. Bye."
- Kohberger: "I'm in rehab."
- Arntz: "I know that."
- Kohberger: "Sorry again."
Northampton Community College in Bethleham, Pensylvania
Bryan made dean's list for both the 2016 and 2017 years at Northampton Community College as noted in both these articles: (Source) (Source #2)
According to multiple reports, Kohberger frequented the Bethlehem brewery Seven Sirens while he attended college in the area. People who have been interviewed said Kohberger allegedly made multiple women uncomfortable, so much so that records of his strange interactions were kept. (Source)
DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania
Kohberger met 'Ferraro", a classmate at DeSales whom he did a biology project with. He had these things to say, according to article from March 15th, 2023.
- “At the time, I would have never said, ‘Oh, yeah. That guy would … do something like this. He may have been a little odd or a little off. But other than that, you’d never expect to be allegedly part of a quadruple homicide,” Ferraro said.
- “It’s a small school. It’s not like it’s a Penn State or a Pitt or a Temple. It’s a very small school in a cornfield,” Ferraro said. “So if you go there, you know most of the people within your study, and pretty much everyone that goes to the school. And he was not known.”
- “It’s not always the creepy guy with glasses and oily hair creeping around the corner,” Ferraro explained. “It’s sometimes just that average Joe, that on the inside, you have no idea what he looks like. But on the outside, he may just seem like a normal person. Much like Bryan Kohberger did.”
Washinton University in Pullman, Washington
Christian Martinez, who lived in the same apartment complex as Kohberger in 2022, had these things to say, according to this article:
- “He just really liked talking to me in the hall. He would talk about his studies, like forensics and stuff and criminology stuff. And at the time, you know, it just seemed like normal times,” Martinez explained.
- “I met his dad in the parking lot. He just stopped and started talking to me,” Martinez said. “His dad was wanting to introduce me to Bryan. And he said something, I don’t remember the exact word he used to describe him, but it was something that was like, ‘He has a hard time making friends,’ or, ‘He’s kind of shy,’” Martinez explained.
- Martinez says Kohberger brought up the murders to him shortly after they happened. “He was like, ‘Oh, did you hear about these murders that happened?’ And it was like so short after they actually happened, there was barely any news articles out, so there wasn’t much that I could have read. So I was like, ‘Yeah, man, it’s crazy. Yeah, of course I’ve heard about them,” Martinez said. “He was like, ‘Yeah, it seems like they don’t have any leads … And then he’s like, ‘Yeah, it seems like they think it was a crime of passion.”
- One conversation that stuck out after Kohberger was arrested was one he had with him about genealogy: “He was talking about genealogy, because I was talking about 23andMe, because my sister had just did all that. And then he brought up something similar in his studies that had to do with being able to catch criminals because of their relative’s DNA. Which is, I guess, how he got caught up in his mix.”
During a pool party that Martinez invited Kohberger to, he met Zach Cartwright, who had these things to say, based on this article:
- “I did notice him and I noticed that he was kind of standing off the entire time. He wasn’t very social, which I thought was kind of weird, because it was a party and people were interacting. He was just kind of standoffish,” Cartwright said. “He did seem … kind of just socially awkward and kind of hard to carry a conversation with, if I remember correctly,” Cartwright said. “But besides that, he mainly kept to the side and was really observant. So much so that, based on that one small interaction, he knew exactly who I was maybe a month or so later when I saw him on that hike.”
- Cartwright's also mentioned his wife felt like Kohberger was a bit 'off' as well: “She didn’t have a good feeling about him, because every time I would like to tell her, “I’m going to invite Bryan,’ because he didn’t have any friends and I was trying to bring him out and maybe meet people. But she was always like, ‘No, please don’t,’” he said.

Crime-scene Scenario Final
Arriving at the crime-scene
- The first thing to be done is block off the crime-scene in order to avoid crime-scene contamination.
- Keeping people out of the scene minimizes evidence contamination, though many may be curious to see what occurred.
- The theory of transfer states that we bring something with us to the crime-scene and take something away, thus skewing the crime-scene from the original state by contamination.
- This is because the original state of the crime-scene was left by the criminal suspect; a lack of contamination allows the scene to be a snapshot in time.
- The curious must be noted and immediately evicted from the scene.
- People to be kept out of the scene include unauthorized civilians, and any more than the absolute minimum number of law enforcement agents and forensic crime processors.
- Waiting for backup to arrive, I should stand guard at the scene preventing these unauthorized people and even holding back eager officers from entering the scene.
- I must call my immediate supervisor and inform them of the deceased white female who is approximately 35 years of age.
- I must obtain an initial search warrant to search the scene; failing to do so will mean that evidence is inadmissible.
- This is another reason why holding personnel from entering is key.
- The coroner must be called in order to pronounce the woman dead, and EMS should be called if they were not already called by the patrol officer 15 minutes earlier, as they would have provided emergency care if the woman showed signs of life.
- This would have been important for many reasons: her livelihood is one reason, but from the stance of a patrol officer or criminal investigator, she may have given a dying declaration of her attacker when informed of her impending death.
- Forensic services are next on the list to call, as they are best equipped to handle the evidence, process it, and ensure that there is not any contamination.
- Their van also contains the best equipment for forensic investigation.
- A cursory search of the immediate area should be done, and any observations should be recorded in my field notes as to ensure the integrity of the preliminary (case) report.
- Officers who are not needed at the residence should ensure that the general area is searched for anything that stands out as well: this includes the area of the trailer park which contains 62 trailers.
- If there is anyone in the trailer, they should be moved out and questioned: does she have kids?
- I should gather the following information in my notes as the investigation commences, which will later be included in my preliminary (case) report when the details of the case culminate:
- The offense, the time of day, date and approximate time of offense if known, identification of the victim, the location of the offense, the method of operation if known, and the identification of the officer.
- Since the offender was not there, I would be unable to record this information initially, and the specifics of the crime won’t be known until confirmed by the crime lab.
- Getting the approximate time is important and can be indicated by rigor mortis (which sets in at about 12 hours) or putrefaction (about 10–20 days).
- All this information will aid me as I attempt to reconstruct the scene of the crime based on the evidence location in relation to its former known position.
Equipment I will have on hand for the investigation:
- To be prepared for crime scene investigation, I must ensure I have a crime toolkit containing the following:
- A 35mm camera or digital camera capable of videotaping with an adequate supply of film and power.
- A portable lighting system to ensure quality photographs, and that I do not miss or step over any evidence.
- Assorted steel tape measures that can reach at least 25 feet.
- A ruler or other measurement marking devices.
- Latent fingerprinting equipment.
- Gloves to protect the scene from contamination—this will enable that I avoid leaving my latent fingerprints.
- Forceps and small tweezers and a pair of scissors.
- A small saw to take evidence, for example, drywall.
- Filter paper or small swabs for liquid evidence or trace evidence.
- Various evidence containers for liquid and solid evidence.
- Paper envelopes for physical evidence.
- Evidence tape to seal off the evidence containers.
- Casting material to take molds of possible footprints around the perimeter with a rubber container for the mixture.
- A magnifying device should be kept.
- Crime-scene tape for the scene.
- Protective clothing: boot covers, eyewear, fiber-free overalls, face masks, hair nets, gowns, and anything that will prevent me from contaminating the scene with things I bring in with me.
- A blue light with yellow glasses which makes small trace evidence more visible can be used to ensure that a photo is taken of all evidence.
- There could be a very small amount of blood somewhere which wouldn't have been sampled, documented, or photographed otherwise.
Entering the home for crime-scene documentation and initial photography/videography
- I may enter upon judicial approval of the search warrant and should do so with the minimum number of personnel.
- Having too many personnel evident in the photography may put the integrity of the evidence into question and taint the scene.
- A contamination list should be made, documenting every person who enters and exits the crime-scene and why: this includes first responding officers, firefighters/EMTs, family members, criminal investigators, and all crime-scene personnel.
- Still, there should not be that many people in the crime-scene, otherwise contamination will be increased as the theory of exchange inevitably manifests.
- I must ensure that myself and my fellow crime-scene personnel are wearing gloves and other protective equipment as to avoid contaminating the scene with latent fingerprints.
- A fiber free boot cover would also be ideal to avoid leaking physical footprints or residue from the boot.
- Anything that is fiber-free and covers the mouth, hair, and overall body would be helpful in avoiding crime-scene contamination since hair, saliva, skin cells, and other bodily fluid or cells may be added to the scene, thus contaminating it.
- Fibers can be left via the theory of exchange and would contaminate the crime scene from its initial state as the offender left it.
- Even if we can't assume that there was an offender despite seeming obvious preventing contamination is an important way to ensure the integrity of the investigation and evidence.
- We should always treat the crime-scene as if there is indeed a criminal homicide as to not miss out on important details, that is how this crime-scene is being handled.
- The first thing for me to do is to take a coordinated series of crime-scene photographs with a digital photography device or a 35-mm camera from a natural point of view.
- These photos must be taken prior to the movement of any object in the crime-scene to ensure that the photo captures the scene as the offender left it.
- The photographs should be taken from a general view of the exterior of the home, as well as general views of the interior, recording the time and details of the photograph in my notes.
- Setting up portable lighting ensures that the elements of the crime are adequately illuminated for photographic documentation.
- The photos should be in color as to provide the best, most accurate image, thus avoiding photographic distortion.
- The following details regarding photography should be recorded in the field notes (and on the back of the photos if possible). Recording these details will ensure that the defense attorney does not attempt to devalue the quality of your evidence, which may make it inadmissible:
- Data to identify the subject of the photograph, but without too much unnecessary information
- The location of the photograph, including the state, city, and street address
- The identifying data of the photographer, including the name, police agency, badge number, and identification number
- The case number if established at the time of dispatch
- The precise time of the photograph
- The date the photograph was taken
- The weather at the time
- The photographic equipment used, including shutter speeds, film type, and developing and printing techniques
- Next, photos of specific rooms should be taken, with special attention to the living room in which the deceased woman was found.
- As the coordination of photos is focused inward, specific components of the crime like physical evidence should be accounted for and detailed; these should also be logged in my field notes.
- This physical evidence should be photographed next to a measurement marker, which can be a ruler or any other easily comparable object of well-known size.
- The body and physical evidence to take a picture (prior to collection from the forensic services and criminal investigator) of includes:
- The deceased woman in the living room, who should be photographed under adequate lighting from a long view; specific shots should be focused on the evidence of harm on her body and clothing.
- The bruises on her face, the marks on her neck, the bloody shirt, and any other signs of postmortem lividity should be photographed and taped without moving the victim; a measurement marker should be placed next to her.
- This will show if an offender moved the woman as to manipulate the crime scene.
- Does she have defense wounds, are there hesitation marks on her related to the knife, or are there multiple stab wounds?
- These must be photographed and taped.
- Is the mark on her neck related to the hanger near her? The photographs make it sure that these items were indeed present at the crime-scene.
- Most of these questions are speculated until absolutely confirmed by the forensic medical examiner, who can use scientific equations to determine the approximate time of death.
- This is a maxim that stands even when the scene seems to point to the obvious.
- The time of death is never entirely accurate, but the photographs can aid in this process, as they capture phenomenon such as rigor mortis or putrefaction when the woman was found.
- The knife should be photographed under adequate light, and a marker should be placed next to the knife to give the best photographic representation of the evidence.
- The misshapen coat hanger should be photographed under adequate light, and a measurement marker should be placed next to the evidence.
- The upended furniture and children’s furniture should be photographed firstly from a long view, and then focused specifically on each piece of furniture under adequate lighting with a measurement marker.
- All of this should be well-documented in the field notes and on the photograph.
- Is there any sign of forced entry to the home? This would be evident by broken glass from windows and pry marks on the doors or windows surrounding the house.
- This should be photographed, videotaped and documented.
- If there is not forced entry it may be suggested that the woman knew her killer.
- A video camera will be used as well to go over all the evidence which was photographed; documentation of the video evidence should also be filled out and recorded in the field notes.
The crime-scene sketch
- The crime-scene sketch occurs after the scene was initially searched, photographed, and videotaped; the sketch is of great value in criminal court.
- This sketch should first be done in pencil to ensure that the sketch accurately portrays evidence and measurements pertaining to the crime-scene.
- The final versions will be done in nonperishable ink via pen.
-
The physical evidence of the crime which includes but is not limited to the knife, misshapen coat hanger, furniture, as well as any other biological evidence like bodily material or fluids, should be drawn out in accurately measured proportions from each other and permanent objects in the crime-scene sketch.
- The final search, and confirmation by the forensic processing unit and investigator, will determine whether this was all the physical evidence at the scene; new evidence can be added to the crime-scene sketch when new measurements are taken.
- The distance from permanent fixtures should be accurately recorded and depicted.
- The crime-scene sketch should be measured by the criminal investigator and accurately display the proportions of the physical evidence; any inaccurate portrayal of the location of evidence can influence the juror perception of the guilt or innocence of the suspect.
- While you do not need to be an artist, the responsibility of sketching should be taken with accuracy and a goal for a clear portrayal in mind.
- Though I can assign another officer to sketch it, I have decided to take this task on.
- A 25-foot steel measuring tape should be used to record these exact and accurately recorded measurements of the physical evidence and permanent objects in the house.
- Too much detail shouldn't be included in the sketch as to avoid confusion; movable items unrelated to the crime-scene convey details irrelevant to the crime and will be avoided.
- Extraneous detail, including movable furniture, may cause issues if jurors recognize that items in the house were moved after the fact: this would be equivalent to crime-scene contamination and may render evidence inadmissible.
- The living room should be sketched out with the deceased woman being drawn in proportion to the knife, coat hanger, upended furniture and children's furniture, walls, and permanent objects in the house; other rooms that are relevant should be included in the sketch.
- I have decided to use the rectangular coordination method, with two right angles being outlined in proportion to the physical evidence and permanent fixtures centering around the living room.
- A projection can be used to document biological/trace evidence like blood stains or other physical evidence that imprinted on the walls; bullet holes would be something that should be ruled out, and if bullet holes are present, they should be documented on the 3D exploded sketch before the dry wall is removed via saw.
- Though it appears obvious that the knife was used in this crime, we do not know this for sure and should make sure to document everything and look for less apparent evidence.
- Even if there was an item introduced to the scene by an offender to throw off investigators, it is not the job of the criminal investigator processing the crime scene to jump to conclusions.
- The crime lab will be able to decipher with scientific certainty what is and is not an original element of the crime.
- Staging is common: for example, the offender may have taken items from the house to make it look like a burglary turned robbery, which went wrong.
- The official crime (preliminary) report should include the accurate sketch with the following details included:
- The name of the investigator and identifying badge number.
- A detailed location of the scene, such as the city, state, and street address; the living room should be noted as the center of the sketch.
- The date and exact time the sketch was first drawn in pencil.
- The evidence listing/key which shows evidence as it corresponds to a letter or mark indicated in said key.
- The case number of the investigation.
- A compass arrow to give direction.
- The scale of the sketch should be included, or the words "not drawn to scale."
- I am choosing to draw it to scale, where one-fourth inch equals one foot.
- The computer-aided design program (CAD), which uses laser lights and takes up to 25,000 measurements per second in 3D, may be utilized if available, for the scale of the scene is most accurate.
- I would request the CAD if available, for it gives the best portrayal of this serious crime, allowing for an accurate point of view and zooming of particular elements of the crime-scene.
The more comprehensive crime-scene search using the strip search method
- In order to collect evidence from the interior of the residence, I will assign roles to officers on the scene, briefing them to watch where they are stepping and not act impulsively or without great care; hasty actions will lead to valuable evidence being trampled and lost.
- The strip search method is what I have decided on, as it allows for the interior of the crime-scene to be searched from one end to the other with more than one officer or forensic processing unit.
- The exterior of the property should be searched from one end to the other as well, switching to a grid search if necessary.
- Walking from one end of the scene to the opposite end of the scene, I will then turn around and cover ground to the right or left without stepping on the same spot twice.
- The rooms of the trailer should be searched in this method, with special attention to the living room where the victim lies: assigning a CSI or officer, and myself to this section (living room) would allow that the scene is thoroughly checked.
- As I move from one end to the other, I will make sure that I shine my flashlight ahead of myself to ensure that I do not damage or carry away smaller pieces of physical evidence.
- Smaller items of physical evidence include woodchips, hairs, paint flakes, glass fragments, or small fibers; if not careful, these may be lost before even accounting for or observing them.
- If new pieces of physical evidence are uncovered, I will take note of it for documentation and photography/videography.
- Things such as footprints inside and outside should be prepared to be photographed and videotaped.
- I must photograph and videotape the new evidence, as well as log it with the following information and account for it in the crime-scene sketch:
- The time and date of evidence discovery.
- The location that I found the evidence.
- The name of myself, or whichever officer, CSI, or criminal investigator discovered it.
- As this is a serious crime, I have chosen that specialized crime scene personnel will assist me.
- A description of the evidence.
- Any identifying marks to further detail the evidence.
- The name of an officer who witnessed the find.
- This will ensure that there is no question that this was indeed an element of the original crime scene; this will save the investigator setbacks in court.
- All the information that is carefully recorded regarding the crime scene evidence aids the crime report.
- The location of this evidence is very important, for it may give us the following information:
- Establish the tracing of, or identification of the suspect.
- Establishing the suspect's modus operandi (MO) or identifying similar MOs via information added to the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) from the completed crime report.
- Confirming alibis or exposing lies (disproving the alibi).
- Connecting suspects to the crime or eliminating suspects.
- The identification of contraband, stolen property, and other illegal items.
- Identifying victims if they are not identified.
- For example, we can't assume the woman lives at this residence before confirming it; a dead body may not be initially tied to the residence.
- Providing investigative leads.
- For example, checking into the husband or boyfriend and the location of the children based on the crime-scene evidence is warranted.
- Providing a statutory element of the offense.
The collection of items of evidence
- Like the crime-scene photography, larger items of physical evidence are taken first; this includes the disheveled furniture and children's furniture, cellphone and computer (if there), the knife, and coat hanger.
- The body will be taken later by a CSI with a Coroner for custody to wait for analysis by a forensic medical examiner trained to perform the autopsy.
- The knife should be examined for latent fingerprints to be logged separately; same with the coat hanger, doorknobs around the house, upended furniture, cell phone, and virtually any physical evidence big enough to grab.
- Crimes of passion are rooted in emotionality and impulsivity: if this is the case, we can likely count on there being latent fingerprints on the doorknob and all over the knife and victim.
- Smaller items of biological or trace evidence such as hair and fibers from clothing must be collected using metal forceps or tweezers as to avoid damaging this delicate evidence which may hold significant value in the criminal investigation.
- Fingerprints and footprints are class evidence to be taken with molds or a fingerprinting kit; fingerprints should be entered into AFIS.
- I should use a swab where applicable to collect fluids or skin cells which contain DNA.
- The shirt likely contains not only the blood of the woman, but the blood of the possible offender.
- DNA from biological evidence should be swabbed, placed in a vial, documented in notes and on the container for the evidence chain of custody, and included to be sent to the crime lab.
- The shirt will later be bagged and taken separately as physical evidence.
- I should make sure to swab under her fingernails to see if the DNA of the offender is there: she likely dug into their skin.
- Is there evidence of sexual assault or semen present?
- This evidence should be marked, swabbed, and collected in a glass vial or cellophane bag.
- Is there evidence of personation? Did the offender take something or did the offender display an excessive need for control over the victim as demonstrated by a possible sexual assault and murder? These are all observations to be recorded, though not conclusively.
- During the searching phase, the evidence should be marked with the following information in the field notes and later in the evidence seal/packaging (I am choosing to bag all evidence and not directly mark it, for it will be sent to the forensics lab):
- The size of the object.
- The physical nature of the object (is it a solid or liquid).
- If the evidence is a liquid, it should always be kept in an airtight container such as a cellophane bag or glass vial and marked.
- The value of the object and the number of like objects.
- The case number pertaining to the evidence.
- The date and exact time retrieved.
- The initials of the person who marked the evidence, BK in this case.
- This process should be done as many times as needed: it may occur up to a thousand or more times.
- It must be counted accurately, and the quantity should be accurately recorded on the container.
Packaging the evidence for the forensic lab
- Each item I collect, including but not limited to the knife, coat hanger, and bloody clothing on the woman, must be packaged in the proper way for forensic lab analysis:
- I must use separate containers for evidence, not mixing things up and causing confusion, no matter how daunting this may be.
- I must use new, clean packaging that was not previously used as to avoid contamination.
- Obviously, blood or other biological evidence renders a container spent.
- Avoiding metal containers which can be reused is ideal to confirm the container is indeed disposed of afterward.
- The package must be sealed with a strong medium, such as a strong tape.
- Items of clothing need to be kept as is and not folded.
- I must keep evidence that was found in a container as it is and mark it.
- I must include a letter of transmittal to state what type of analysis must be done: for example, wound analysis, DNA or fingerprinting, even ballistics.
- Again, I must account for and log all this evidence in the chain of custody form: where it was found, how, when, who is transporting it, and where is the evidence locker located.
- The woman must be removed by a certified professional and sealed, taken into custody by the coroner and sent to the forensic medical examiner for forensic autopsy: this must all be logged in the field notes and initial crime report before compiled in the closing report.
- The crime-scene will be surveyed if necessary, but the longer the time it takes to do so, the more the chance the crime scene is contaminated.
- When mailed, I must always send this evidence in registered mail enclosed with a secure receipt.
- This careful collection of evidence is all necessary for the crime lab criminalists to be capable of analyzing all elements of the crime, being that they rarely come on the scene.
Evidence chain of custody and inventory receipts
- The careful description of evidence, when and where the evidence was found, and who found it, are all related to the evidence chain of custody.
- All evidence must be described and then transported and placed in an evidence locker — the identity of the transporter and the location of the evidence locker must be accounted for.
- If the evidence is taken out of the locker at the police department, it must be recorded who did so and why they did so.
- The knife, misshapen wire coat hanger, and any physical, biological, or trace evidence found must be accounted for, bagged and sealed, and then kept in an evidence locker.
- Her bloody clothing should be examined as well, but this would infer that she must be moved and have items of clothing removed; this is something the forensic crime scene processing unit should do.
- If she had a cellphone or computer nearby, this should be described, logged, and transported to the digital forensic lab for digital forensic examination.
- Did she communicate with anyone?
- Did this communication indicate a conflict?
- Did her husband or boyfriend contact her?
- Did anyone else contact her?
- This may help investigators look in the right direction if things turn out to be not so obvious; again, we can't assume it was the husband or boyfriend just because there may have been a history of domestic violence or a PFA, despite this being very common. Also, she may have children's furniture for her nieces or nephews, so we can't even assume that she had kids.
- When moved, all items will have inventory receipts which document the movement for the chain of custody form.
- All of this is for the accountability and integrity of the evidence, and thus the proper outcome of the criminal investigation.
- Failing to do so leads to injustice — there can be a very clear link between victim and offender, but if this is not accounted for via chain of custody, then it will be inadmissible.
Outreach to other agencies and immediate elements of the investigation
- A lot of these inquiries would occur concurrently with the crime-scene investigation.
- Does she have kids? The county records office should give us this information.
- If so, the welfare of the children should be ensured: we are aware that there are disheveled items of children's furniture around, but where are the kids?
- Calls to be made to all family members of the deceased would help narrow down locations.
- Calls to the clerk of courts office to see if there is a PFA out on the husband or boyfriend should be made.
- The husband or boyfriend of the deceased woman should be contacted to establish an alibi — he needs to be immediately located and questioned.
- The kids should be located as soon as possible, and an amber alert should be set if they are not accounted for: Does their father even have rights to see the kids under normal circumstances and did he take them?
- Neighbors should be questioned to see if the father was around, or if any suspicious person was present.
- Anyone who normally passes by the scene, such as a mailman, should be questioned and an alibi established.
- Where were the neighbors when this happened? Their alibis should be evident and supported.
- Did they notice anything unusual?
- Maybe the father was seen with the kids leaving the scene: this can be important evidence if the father is not responding and the kids are not located.
- The amber alert can be set based on the vehicle, plate numbers, and description of the Father if applicable.
- Eyewitnesses and surveillance footage in the trailer park, surrounding area, drugstore which oversees the trailer, or nearby gas station, can give us information on this crime.
- Surveillance footage is circumstantial evidence but may lead investigators in the right direction and to the apprehension of the suspect.
- If we can't gather conclusive information by the end of the investigation, the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) can help.
- ViCAP may be utilized if this case happens to be unrelated to a domestic dispute: this may be the work of a serial killer, though this is highly unlikely.
- Still, we are only looking at the facts of the investigation rather than conjecture, and we can only say for sure once the suspect is apprehended and the evidence is strong enough to say what happened with scientific certainty.
The compilation of evidence in the preliminary report, progress report, closing report, and prosecution report
- My notes enabled that I wrote a thorough and accurate preliminary case report which contained all the facts of the case.
- I will need to update it with a progress report as we track down suspects, and eventually create the closing and prosecution reports which will be used in court if we get evidence of a specific person who committed this specific crime.
- The closing report will be the culmination of all the facts after investigation and lab analysis which lead to the most accurate reconstruction of the scene possible.
- The steps that I have listed will ensure that the prosecution report and closing report reflect a proper investigative procedure with full admissibility of evidence into court.
- All the notifications were made, and the evidence chain of custody and investigative procedure ensured the integrity and accuracy of the evidence of the crime scene.
- With thorough documentation, it is unlikely that the defense will be able to discredit the investigation and render evidence inadmissible.
- This clear information will allow the jury to deliberate based on all the evidence.
- Finally, adding this information to the FBI's National Incident-Based Report System (NIBRS) will allow the FBI's Uniform Crime Report (UCR) to give summative information of all applicable crimes to help police officers, criminologists, and criminal investigators understand the social trends of crime, thus aiding future cases.
Bryan Kohberger's TapATalk Posts on The Visual Snow Forum
Bryan Kohberger was a regular poster in the Visual Snow TapATalk Forums between 2009 and 2012. Below are some of the more relevant posts he made
September 23rd, 2010: "I can't remember anything recent or anything from childhood. I used to be able to remember everything from my childhood and everything evey day for a month before me... now I am just a blank soul living in the now... what hurts the most is knowing that every time I try to remember things from the past, I can't, and my mind is so hung up with vs, all the migraine ( vs) effects mentally, the buzzing in my ear, that I can't even focus on that. I got it september 21st of last year, and ever since then i have been depressed. I can't remember anything at all. And I always have this horrible pressure in my head.. My mind is never not on visual snow and i always wonder what a normal person would be doing while i sit there and suffer. This whole thing has made me crazy, I feel like my life is pointless because people can think about times with parents/ childhood memories and be happy, and I won't be able to." (Source)
January 15th, 2011: "I have had VS since september 21st of 2009. Since then I have changed, mainly from the anxiety and sense of derealization and hopelessness. Today, I felt a deep heartbeat in my head, one that felt through my eyes and all over my head. I get this a lot but never think about it. At times when I lay down, and then get up for something I get this feeling in my head that is weird and then i see this bright white version of VS. I also feel the beat. My theory is that VS seems to be migraine related, but in reality it is just a weird thing that occurs for some people where the arteries and blood vessels in ones head are inflamed for a large amount of time. I am sure no MRI would pick up slight inflamation from the veins/ arteries that pump through our heads. I always have this weird feeling in my head and to me, it feels like something inflamed in my head. We need to try to figure out a way to stop the inflamation. I think that anxiety causes "VS". why do you think migraine pills dont work for VS? obviously because we dont have inflamed parts of our brain, we have inflamed blood vessles/ veins (whatever you want to call them)." (Source)
May 12th, 2011: "I always feel as if I am not there, completely depersonalized. Mentally I experience: (Source)
- Fog
- Lack of comprehension at some times
- feel like my life is a movie (depersonalization)
- Depression
- No interest in activity
- Constant thought of suicide
- Crazy thoughts
- Delusions of Grandeur
- Anxiety
- Poor self image
- poor social skills
- NO EMOTION
- I feel like nothing has a point to it
- When I get home, I am mean to my family. This started when VS did. I felt no emotion and along with the depersonalization, I can say and do whatever I want with little remorse... everyone hates me pretty much I am an asshole"
June 10th, 2011: "I feel blank and so generic, I can barely remember my eventful childhood... As I try to think of my childhood, I become upset and into a dperessed state..." (Source)
July 4th, 2011: "I have had this horrible Depersonalization go on in my life for almost 2 years. I often find myself making simple human interactions, but it is as if I am playing a role playing game such as oblivion; I can see what is going on, I am slightly into it, but I can pause the game and focus on my real life. In this case, my life is the game and my old self can be reached by pausing the game, but how? I often think of things that humans do, things I have done my whole life, I feel like an organic sack of meat with no self worth, as I am starting to view everyone as this. Everything I have ever done, makes no sense. How did things get this way? How am I wearing this shirt, and who decided that humans shall wear shirts like this? Are we all just advanced ANIMALS with possession, or is there more, more that I can't see? I can't connect. I view everything as I would if I was playing oblivion, pointless and full of nothing, out of reality. I am moving out of my house, my last holidays were already lived, but where was I? As my family group hugs and celebrates, I am stuck in this void of nothing, feeling completely no emotion, feeling nothing. I feel dirty, like there is dirt inside of my head, my mind, I am always dizzy and confused. I feel no self worth. I am intelligent but I feel the opposite. I say things I don't mean. The last holiday in my house, the house I grew up in, the house I once contributed to, the house I once felt at home in, is passed. As I hug my family, I look into their faces, I see nothing, it is like I am looking at a video game, but less. I feel less than mentally damaged, it is like I have severe brain damage. I am stuck in the depths of my mind, where I have to constantly battle my demons, am I here or am I fake? I feel myself slipping away, I hear screams faintly, but I constantly battle away from it. What if I let go... where would I be? Would I ever come back to reality? I try to remember where I originated from, but I can't. I barely remember my childhood. I often fear being 80 years old, alone, and having faint memories of my parents, everything I missed out on. I think about my father, what a good man he is, how I treat him like dirt because I have this condition, and I can't take it. I might spiral out of control and lose myself in the void, I can't let it all go. All of these regrets I predict for my future self... all of these thoughts of remorse... I got this when I was in my stage of discovery. Now I look in the mirror and I see this sickly, tired, useless and stupid man int he mirror, he is a complete disgrace, he doesn't even deserve to live! I remember when I was 15, I would wander alone at 2 am, everything was so generic, nowhere felt like home, I saw things that were not there, a different reality. I felt eerie and alone, I died during those nights. I felt like a criminal, but where was my record? I can't talk without flinching now. I used to be this healthy blonde haired boy with blue eyes, and in a few years I have darker hair and darker eyes, half the body weight. Where did I leave off? I try to sleep, I try to clear my head, but the pressure won't go away, the pain and depression won't leave. Being me is this horrible disease that I was given. I think of this as I succumb to sleep, but I see a large intensity of black/yellow/white fuzz; it makes my mind fizzle and I can barely keep in the bounds of reality. It is as if the ringing in my ears and the fuzz in my vision is simply all of the demons in my head mocking me. I fall asleep, but I wake up quickly to bloody screams. Is any of this here? Am I brain damaged? NO?! Then why am I like this? I have these thoughts all in my head, I search for someone to relate to me, everyone looks down upon me, no one can relate. As I try to read, suddenly my eyes look right through the words, when I look up, I see blue dots near the center of my vision. When I feel slightly calm, it gets hard to breath, and I see bright dots in my vision. Nothing I do is enjoyable. I am blank, I have no opinion, I have no emotion, I have nothing. Can you relate?" (Source)
December 19th, 2011: "I have had this for over 2 years, and I have it bad in every single way. Not one night have I slept normal since and I feel like I am trapped here. I have been able to block it out for awhile now but I realize what is wrong and it suddenly becomes unbelievable. I am desensitized in every way now.People say these are supposed to be the years I enjoy and cherish, well I cant say I will cherish these days." (Source)
February 20th, 2012:"I have just accepted my visual snow finally. I don't even feel the need to stay away from the forum, it doesn't scare me anymore! anyone else come to terms? I feel like comign to terms could be a bad thing though.." (Source)
Bryan Kohberger's Soundcloud (Exarr)
A popular topic as of late is Bryan's soundcloud account where a rap song he wrote called Rise Up was uploaded in 2012. I transcribed the lyrics I heard below.
Interestingly enough, this New York Times article seems to have gotten the song all wrong - they quote Bryan as saying "You are not my equal / You are evil but I’m devil" when it's clear to me the line is "you are evil but I'm feeble". I don't know if this was just a misheard lyrics or an attempt to distort the facts to paint an even worse picture (let's face it, we don't need to do that - his crimes speak for themselves).
This song, in my opinion, is actually related to a post Bryan made on April 25th, 2011 on the TapATalk Visual Snow forums:
Releasing a rap song for everyone with VS
"I want to express our struggles through rap, I think people should know.

Always the same thing that disrupts my life
wonder when I'll change
I guess when the time is rightProcrastinating my deranged to change would be a fight
so I'm pacifist
like I'm afraid to get a buddy fix
look at this my mind is pissed and I keep running
why is this
when I hit it always losing leaves them stunning
always gentle giant
no defiance
i'll build an alliance
then still think that I am peasant
I'm stuck in the future
but I'm never looking at the fucking present
keep it up, act like you're all that
here's a cookie too and a present
lead from a desert eagle
deagles going louder than my motherfucking beagle
end your life you get no sequel
leave your love ones crying like some seagulls
you are not my equal
you are evil but I'm feeble
and now I'm going regal
don't fuck with us
if you learn your lesson
next time you'll see
